Singapore: Mongolia has proved once again at an Olympic Games that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to winning gold medals. The NOC of Mongolia is still celebrating two gold medals at the IOC’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games – from a team of only 11 athletes in seven sports.

Mongolia is represented in athletics, boxing, judo, gymnastics, swimming, triathlon and wrestling. The two golds were won by gymnast Ganbat Erdenebold, 17, in the boys’ vault and by Baatarzorig Battsetseg, 17, in the girls’ 60kg freestyle wrestling. Two other athletes had fifth-place finishes in wrestling and judo.

Mr. B. Badamsuren, Chef de Mission and Executive Board Member of  Mongolia NOC, is very satisfied with the success of the athletes, and is especially thankful for a first-ever gymnastics gold for  wrestling-crazy Mongolia in its sporting history.

Thus, Mongolia NOC has proved once again its excellent ability to win medals with a compact team; like at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when they obtained two golds and two silvers from 28 athletes in seven sports to place 31st overall in the team standings among the 205 participating nations and regions.

On being updated on Mongolia’s success in Singapore by the NOC, OCA Director General Husain Al-Musallam sent a congratulatory message.

“On behalf of OCA I congratulate MGL NOC and the Olympic and Sport Movement in Mongolia for the very good result and the winning of the medals. I wish you the best of luck at the Asian Games in Guangzhou,” said Captain Husain.
